DRY RISER SYSTEMS
A dry riser is a pipe system that can be externally connected to from a pressurised water source by firefighters or trained personnel only. It is a vertical pipe run intended to distribute water to multiple levels of a building with landing valves or structure as a component of the fire suppression systems. These systems can also be used horizontally to reach buildings with restricted access from the main road.
All buildings require some form of fire protection so Dry risers are widely used when the water pressure of a building would not be enough for fire suppression. The quickest and easiest way for firefighters to get the required water distribution to the source of the fire is to use a dry riser. In the UK, dry risers must allow a fire engine access within 18 m of the external dry riser inlet breaching valve. Dry risers in occupied buildings must be within a fire-resistant shaft, usually one of a building’s fire escape staircase enclosures. All systems are designed and installed in line with the current BS9990 2015
